Canada recently announced, at the start of the year, a new visa, the start-up visa, toallow business people with ideas for starting new companies in Canada to obtain permanent residence in Canada. The United States may be starting a similar program soon, with the Senate currently studying a new bill, « The StartupAct », to boost growth in start-up companies through immigration modifications that would allow foreign skilled workers and entrepreneurs. The modifications would include a « Entrepreneur visa ».

This comes at the same time when the Senate is considering increasing the number of visas and green cards for high-skilled workers. The modifications discussed also include a slight easing of the requirements for the American H-1B visa.These all are part of President Obama’s immigration reform, Obama having expressed his wish to bring more skilled workers to the United States and retain more foreign students.
